Every glazer has faced this job: a canopy installation with no room to swing a crane, a stairwell atrium with a two-metre access gap, or a retail unit where the only route to the install point is through a loading bay barely wider than the panel itself. On these jobs, standard lifting equipment simply doesn't fit, and that's exactly the gap glazing robots were built to close.

The Problem With Confined-Space Glazing

Canopy glazing and tight-access installs create a specific set of issues:

• No overhead crane access, because the canopy structure or building overhang blocks the sightline
• Narrow approach routes - doorways, scaffolding gaps, or site boundaries that rule out larger plant
• Awkward lift angles, since canopy glass often needs to go in at a tilt, not straight up
• Uneven or unfinished ground, common on active sites before final surfacing is laid
• Panel weights that are too much for manual handling but too awkward for a standard vacuum lifter alone

Why the Geometry of a Glazing Robot Works Here

Unlike a crane or a boom lift, a glazing robot is built around powered tilting and side-shift as core functions, not accessories. That means once the panel is lifted, the operator can angle it precisely to match a sloped canopy or an awkward reveal without repositioning the whole machine, critical when there's only centimetres of clearance either side.

Built-in wheels give controlled, low-speed travel through tight site routes, while solid tyres mean the machine can cross rough or part-finished ground without needing a smooth floor first - a common issue on canopy jobs, which often happen early in a build before external areas are finished.

Choosing a robot with more capacity than the job strictly needs isn't just about the panel weight, it also affects manoeuvrability. A machine sized correctly for the job will fit through tighter gaps and turn in smaller spaces than an oversized unit brought in "just in case."

Boom Extension: Reaching Over, Not Just Up

Many canopy jobs need the panel to travel outward as much as upward, over a walkway, past a structural beam, or across an entrance.
